ASTM D4169, Standard Practice for Performance Testing of Shipping Containers and Systems, is prepared by the D10 committee of the American society for materials and Testing. ASTM D4169 is one of the test procedures accepted by the FDA. ASTM d4169-16 is a new version of this test standard.
ASTM d4169-16 is used in laboratories to assess the capacity of packaging transport units to withstand circulation hazards. ASTM d4169-16 is divided into 18 logistics environments, 10 hazard factors and three test levels. According to different logistics environments, hazard factors are sequentially combined to evaluate the resistance of the transportation unit.
10 risk factors:
Procedure A: manual and mechanical operation
Program A simulates the hazards that may occur when a person or machine handles the transportation unit during loading and unloading, such as free fall, edge fall, Angle fall, tipping, etc. This program is generally located at the beginning and end of the whole test program.
Program B&C: stack
Program B&C simulates the effects of pressure on the transportation unit during storage and transportation.
Program D: stack vibration
Program D simulates the impact of dynamic load and vibration on the transportation unit during the process of transportation. In the laboratory simulation, a certain load will be placed on the top of the transportation unit.
Program E: carrier vibration
Program E simulates the capacity of a transportation unit to withstand vibrations, which generally come from truck suspension systems, engines, tires, rails, aircraft turbines, etc. Different vehicles have different test spectra.
Program F: bulk load vibration
Program F simulates the process of repeated collisions between the baffles of the transport unit and the vehicle in unloaded bulk transportation.
Program G: train track, group
Program G simulates the collision of transportation units and carriages in the process of changing tracks and grouping.
Procedure H: environmental hazards
Program H simulates the ability of a transportation unit to withstand environmental hazards, such as cyclic temperature changes, spraying, etc., generally used for military supplies.
Procedure I: low pressure
Program I simulates the effect of high altitude on the transportation unit, mainly on products sensitive to pressure difference such as airtight packaging and liquids.
Program J: concentrated impact
Program J simulates the ability of the transportation unit to resist low energy impact in the process of sorting and transportation, mainly for single corrugated packaging, plastic film packaging, etc.
